As the festive season approaches, many of us are looking forward to a well-deserved break, but unfortunately, this is also the time when burglaries tend to increase by nearly 50%.

Damian Judge of Trellidor says our homes become easy targets for would-be criminals during the holiday season, especially when our routine is disrupted, and we're away for extended periods. "There are two sides to it," he explains. "There are the guys who enjoy the influx of holidaymakers to our coast, so there are houses that are left exposed when people go on holiday. But you also have the other side where people are at their holiday homes, where those houses have been quiet with not a lot of activity, and all of a sudden there's a whole group of people there with cell phones and laptops and TVs are on, so that also creates a heightened risk from a theft perspective."

Judge advises homeowners to take a multi-layered approach to security.

"It's about making sure that you've double-checked all your security measures are in place and adequately working.” This includes ensuring that your alarmsystem, electric fences, and barriers are all well-maintained and functioning correctly. He also recommends checking in with your neighbours and sharing your holiday plans with them, so they can keep an eye on your property.

He also highlights the importance of visible deterrents, such as security cameras and warning signs, in making it less attractive for burglars to target your home. "Noise is exactly the key," he says. "If you've got dogs roaming around the garden, that makes it less easy and less attractive for them." He also notes that a noisy alarm system can give you more time to react to a potential break-in.

In addition to these practical tips, Judge emphasises the value of community in keeping your home safe. "There's nothing better than the community to help out in these times," he says. "Sharing with your neighbours where you'll be, and make sure there are regular visits and checking in.”
