Lifesaving South Africa emphasises the importance of water safety and education this festive season.
Its #WaterSmart campaign is aimed at educating residents and holiday visitors about safely enjoying beaches, swimming pools, and inland waterways.
Management board member Dhaya Sewduth said rough sea conditions and multiple rescues of bathers struggling in the water have been a recent challenge.
“This is targeted to the parents, with the kids. If kids see their parents are invested in the safety, they will also learn.”
While lifeguards are on duty for 52 weekends and public holidays throughout the year, the period from November to March is particularly busy.
Sewduth emphasised the need for people, especially parents, to be aware of water safety and drowning prevention.
“We often hear of tragic incidents at home… We all know it just takes a little toddler to fall headfirst into the water and you could end up with a tragedy.”
He stressed the importance of being aware of rip currents, spotting warning flags and staying within designated areas.
By taking these precautions, people can enjoy the coastal areas while staying safe.
