The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party is demanding that eThekwini municipality be put under administration over the wastewater management crisis
The party said the situation is no longer an “unfortunate incident” but a chronic governance failure.
The call comes after water pollution levels resulted in the closure of four popular beaches
Beaches including blue lagoon, battery beach, country club beach and eThekwini beach have been closed after water quality tests confirmed contamination linked to sewage spills
This week a damning court judgment found the municipality failed in its obligation to prevent sewage spills from leaking into its rivers and oceans, causing severe environmental damage.
The MK Party says the municipality is putting the health of visitors and residents at risk by failing to address the issue
The party is now calling on the minister of water and sanitation to intervene immediately.
It says the minister cannot continue to issue policy statements while one of South Africa’s major metros repeatedly allows untreated or poorly treated sewage to flow into rivers and the ocean.
The party has vowed to also lodge a formal complaint with the South African Human Rights
Commission (SAHRC)
