Firefighting teams in the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM), supported by various partner agencies, are continuing operations to fully extinguish a wildfire in the Berg River area.

Authorities confirmed that crews have successfully subdued the firelines closest to nearby properties, significantly reducing the immediate risk to residents and infrastructure. Due to this progress, aerial firefighting resources have been stood down for the time being.

According to Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the municipality, ground teams will remain on-site throughout the night to manage the remaining firelines and prevent potential flare-ups.

“The Cape Winelands District Municipality Fire Services and various partners report that the fire in the Berg River area near the R45 has been contained. Teams will, however, stay in the area to continue with monitoring and mopping-up activities,” stated Otto.

The municipality has confirmed that no damage to property has been reported thus far. While the situation is currently stable, the presence of ground crews ensures a rapid response should wind conditions change or hotspots reignite.
