The information regulator is once again attempting to stop the Department of Basic Education from publishing matric results in newspapers.
Recently, the Gauteng High Court handed down a ruling stating that the publication of matric results using only examination numbers does not violate any of the country’s privacy laws.
Last year, the court also dismissed the regulator’s urgent application to stop the publication of matric results.
The regulator is an independent section 39 body that monitors and enforces compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Regulator spokesperson Nomzamo Zondi says the regulator will be making an application for leave to appeal the high court’s decision.
“The regulator studied the judgement and has filed an appeal, which has the effect of suspending the execution of the orders that are the subject of the appeal, pending the final determination of the application and any subsequent appeals.” Zondi said.
