As wildfires continue to burn across parts of the Western Cape during peak fire season, emergency crews in the Overberg have spent several days battling flames near Eluxolweni and Pearly Beach, where residents were evacuated as firelines advanced toward homes.
Although the fire around the Eluxolweni informal settlement has now been contained, residents say the emergency has once again highlighted the risks faced by communities living in fire-prone areas.

While the immediate threat has eased, some residents say the fire exposed serious challenges during emergencies, particularly in areas without running water due to municipal arrears.

Thirty-nine-year-old Esmerelda Eropam, who cares for her elderly parents, described the fear of being unable to respond as the fire moved closer.
"In an emergency like this, when the flames reach us before emergency services, we can't even turn the tap open to save ourselves."

Fire officials say crews prioritised protecting homes and infrastructure as resources were stretched across multiple fires in the municipality.
Authorities have also urged residents to remain vigilant and prepare to evacuate if they feel unsafe.
