Three dead following collision between bakkie and truck on N3

Three people have died following an accident between a bakkie and a truck on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal earlier on Friday. 

The collision took place this morning on the N3 eastbound towards Durban, between the M13 bridge and the Shongweni off-ramp.

According to preliminary reports, the bakkie was travelling westbound towards Pietermaritzburg when the driver lost control and collided with a truck travelling towards Durban.

The bakkie caught fire after crashing into concrete barriers. The impact and subsequent blaze resulted in the following:

Two occupants were burned beyond recognition inside the vehicle.

One occupant was thrown from the vehicle upon impact and died at the scene.

Provincial Transport Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya stated: “It is unfortunate that this accident comes after we recorded a decrease in fatalities and accidents. The scene of the accident is still active and the Durban-bound lane is closed to enable the recovery and cleaning up process to proceed.”
