Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu has been described as a committed public servant.
Mngwevu’s body was recovered in Mozambique on Tuesday night, more than a week after the car he was travelling in was washed away by floods in the Chokwè area.
The bodies of three others who were with Mngwevu in the vehicle were also found during Tuesday’s extensive search and recovery operation.
Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza said Mngwevu dedicated his life to improving mobility, infrastructure development, and service delivery for the city’s residents.
Xhakaza said the 40-year-old’s passing was a massive loss to the city, adding that he paid attention to detail and ensured the community’s interests were looked after.
Xhakaza also sent condolences to the families of the three other people who were travelling with Mngwevu at the time of the incident.
The city also conveyed its sympathies to the people of Mozambique who have been affected by the recent floods.
West Rand Mayor William Matsheke said he was also saddened by the tragedy.
Mngwevu was also the leader of government business in the city.
Earlier this week, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) deployed its emergency response team to support the governments of Mozambique and South Africa, following recent floods that resulted in deaths, destruction of infrastructure, and the disruption of essential services.
