Memphis-bred saxophonist Kirk Whalum is set to share the stage with some of South Africa’s most beloved and iconic artists, including Judith Sephuma, Lira, Zonke and Mafikizolo.
Speaking to Eyewitness News about the upcoming Gauteng Soul and Jazz Concert - taking place at the SunBet Arena on Saturday, 13 June 2026 - Whalum shared that South Africa holds a special place in his heart.
“South Africa holds a special place in my heart because the energy is truly different. The audiences don’t just listen - they participate. There’s a warmth, emotional openness, and spiritual connection that you can feel immediately,” said Whalum.
He noted that local jazz fans bring a unique history, joy, and resilience to the music.
"That exchange of energy is powerful and uplifting, and it’s something I experience far less elsewhere. It’s what makes performing in South Africa so unforgettable and keeps drawing me back.”

THE MAGIC OF COLLABORATION
Whalum believes that performing alongside artists like Sephuma and Mafikizolo is where the true "magic" happens.
“When different musical worlds meet, the result is a powerful conversation built on groove, melody, and storytelling. The mix of sophistication, rhythm, and celebration creates an atmosphere that’s unexpected and uplifting. That shared energy between artists and audience is what makes the experience truly electric.”
Mafikizolo told EWN they are highly intentional about elevating every detail of their performance, from the musical arrangements to their stage presence.
“It’s not just about performing the hits, but about delivering a refined, world-class show that celebrates African excellence," the duo stated.
"We want the audience to feel the pride, the joy, and the cultural depth in every moment.”
Fans can expect a journey through the Mafikizolo catalogue, but with a fresh, reimagined energy. The group plans to debut new arrangements specifically for the night - layered, musical, and designed to feel elevated.
“Afro-pop, soul, and jazz all come from the same place - emotion, rhythm, and storytelling. Sharing the stage with a legend like Kirk Whalum allows for a powerful musical exchange where groove and melody meet in a very organic way.”

A CELEBRATION OF LOCAL DEPTH
For South African jazz and Afro-pop singer Sephuma, sharing the stage with Whalum is both an honour and a responsibility.
“It affirms the depth and quality of South African jazz. It reminds me that our stories, our sound, and our musical language belong on the world stage, standing confidently alongside global excellence,” Sephuma said.
While no formal collaborations are pre-planned for the evening, Sephuma says that is the beauty of the genre.
“The mood, the energy in the room, and the connection between artists will guide what happens on stage. If moments present themselves organically, we’ll follow them - allowing the music to speak naturally and honestly in the moment.”
Reflecting on the evolution of the local soul and jazz scene since her debut, Sephuma noted a deeper appreciation for live musicianship today.
“Our listeners are more informed, more curious, and more supportive of artists who stay true to their roots while exploring new sounds. That growth is very encouraging to witness from the stage.”
