The Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) has condemned the eviction of nurses from the Livingstone Hospital nurses’ home in Gqeberha.

The union said the Eastern Cape Department of Health removed nurses without proper notice or alternative accommodation, despite agreements that guarantee housing for health workers recruited from outside the province.

HOSPERSA has described the move as inhumane, unlawful and a direct violation of labour agreements.

HOSPERSA said the affected nurses left their homes and families to render critical healthcare services in Gqeberha, only to be evicted without support or due process.

The union has also rejected attempts to link its members to alleged criminal activity at the hospital, calling the claims defamatory and without evidence.

It further raises concerns over procedural fairness, saying it was never served with papers despite the department allegedly approaching the courts in 2025.

The union said it will pursue the matter legally until a lawful and compassionate resolution is reached.
