The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has recalled certain Buttanutt peanut butter products after detecting unsafe levels of aflatoxin.
The toxin is produced by mould that can develop in food products like peanuts when they are stored or processed under poor conditions.
The NCC warns that consuming food contaminated with aflatoxin can cause symptoms such as nausea and stomach pain, and may be particularly dangerous for children and people with weakened immune systems.
"You might have bought these products if you're in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, as well as the Western Cape province, as they were distributed through various retailers. If you have these products, do immediately stop consuming and take the product back to the point of purchase for a full refund," explained NCC spokesperson Pheto Ntaba.
