KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)'s anti-corruption unit has arrested two police officers for allegedly extorting money from illegal shebeen operators and illicit cigarette sellers in Amaoti.
The sergeants, based at the Inanda police station and Ntuzuma magistrate’s court, are accused of using their official IDs and firearms to demand payments in exchange for not making arrests.
KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the pair was initially caught by community members in January.
“When the community arrived at Inanda police station, they were perplexed to find out that the two police officers were not brought to the station and that nobody at the community service centre had any knowledge about the alleged extortion and the apprehension of police officers.”
The two officers are due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Monday on four counts of extortion.
