The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) welcomed an investigation into harmful chemicals in sanitary products sold across the country.
The National Consumer Commission launched a probe into nine sanitary pad and panty liner suppliers following a recent study by the University of the Free State, which found hormone-disrupting chemicals in several popular brands.
These brands included Always, Lil-Lets, Stayfree, Kotex, and We-Flow.
Suppliers were requested to carry out additional testing and provide the latest laboratory results for evaluation.

MISA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said menstrual products were essential health items used daily by millions of women, and any risk to consumer safety was deeply alarming.
"Some of these brands that are being investigated are widely used by working women, including many MISA members. The possibility that essential menstrual products may expose users to toxic chemicals is unacceptable," said Hlubi-Majola.
The union also demanded full transparency regarding the levels and the risks of chemicals detected.
"We are also demanding consistent communication of any confirmed dangers as well as stronger regulation and mandatory testing of all menstrual products."
