The opening days of the Democratic Alliance's (DA) leadership nomination window have already sparked significant interest from the party’s younger cohort, with several members stepping forward to contest senior national positions.

With the DA scheduled to hold its Federal Congress in April, the party officially opened the nomination process on Friday for candidates seeking to serve within its top leadership structures.

A GENERATIONAL SHIFT

Beyond Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who is contesting for Federal Leader, and Gauteng DA Leader Solly Msimanga, who is running for Deputy Federal Chairperson, a wave of younger leaders is declaring their ambitions.

Insiders within the DA describe this movement as a transition toward a new generation, as younger figures increasingly eye influential roles.

KEY CONTENDERS AND NOMINATIONS

Siviwe Gwarube: The Basic Education Minister has accepted a nomination to run for Deputy Federal Chairperson.

Solly Malatsi: Currently holding one of the three Deputy Federal Chairperson positions, Malatsi has announced he will seek re-election, stating he believes he still has more to offer in the role.

The positions are currently shared by Malatsi, JP Smith, and Anton Bredell.

Karabo Khakhau: The DA National Spokesperson has also entered the fray, aiming for the position of Deputy Federal Council Chair.

With just over a month to go before the conference begins, the field is increasingly defined by those regarded as part of the party’s "younger generation."

While veteran leaders remain in the mix, the surge of interest from the youth wing suggests a significant play for the party’s future direction.
