Packaging group Mpact has reported higher revenue and a stronger asset base for the year ended December 2025, even as weak economic conditions continued to weigh on parts of its business.
The company, which produces paper and plastic packaging used in industries ranging from agriculture to retail, said revenue increased by 5% to R14 billion during the year.
At the same time, the value of the company’s net asset value (NAV) rose by 6% to R37.76 per share.
Despite the difficult trading environment, Mpact managed to keep its core operating profit stable. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) remained steady at R1.5 billion.
However, headline earnings per share, a key measure of profitability used by investors, slipped slightly to 307 cents, down from 324 cents the year before.
The company declared a total dividend of 60 cents per share for the year.
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Bruce Strong, CEO of Mpact says demand for its packaging linked to agriculture, particularly fruit exports was a bright spot during the year.
"We're benefitting now from some of the projects that we've done in the past, focused on the citrus exports...and they've helped us in what was otherwise a difficult market."
- Bruce Strong, CEO - Mpact
"We took a view, probably 10 years ago that we need to focus on business on sectors of the economy that are not necessarily, completely reliant on consumer spending in South Africa, and one of those is export fruit...so we've invested quote extensively behind that sector."
- Bruce Strong, CEO - Mpact
"We collected more than 640 million kilograms worth of recyclables last year, most of which we used in our own business to make new products, and we're by far the biggest recycler on the African continent."
