President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed the deployment of 2200 members of the SANDF alongside police in the fight against crime amid growing questions about the constitutionality of the move.
The deployment forms part of Operation Prosper, which targets illegal mining and gang-related crime in several provinces, including Gauteng.
The deployment is for the period 01 March 2026 until 31 March 2027 at a cost of over R823 million.
Earlier this week, SANDF members were seen conducting raids with police in parts of Johannesburg sparking debate after soldiers entered residential areas in Eldorado Park, Riverlea, Westbury, and Sophiatown.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya explains the deployment.
“The deployed members of the SANDF will assist the south african police service to prevent and combat illegal mining and gangsterism in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape.”
