In a historic debut at the New York City Half-Marathon, Adriaan Wildschutt has become the first South African to ever win the prestigious event.

Wildschutt broke the tape with a commanding time of 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

The Olympian executed a masterclass in tactical racing, maintaining a conservative pace within the lead pack for the first 10km.

He made a decisive move just after the halfway mark, seizing the sole lead at the 15km point. By the 20km mark, Wildschutt had built a formidable 11-second gap over American runner Zouhair Talbi, a lead he successfully defended all the way to the finish line.

“This was the move for the win,” Wildschutt shared on Facebook. “The plan was to run a really hard last 5km. From mile 10 to 11, I ran a 4:10 mile to separate myself from the field. From that point, it was more hills, but I kept pushing until the finish line."

Wildschutt also expressed his gratitude to his fans, drawing inspiration from a famous quote: “Thank you all for your amazing support! Connor McGregor once said: 'When one of us goes to war, we all go to war' (South Africans).”

This victory adds to an already impressive resume for the Ceres-born athlete.

Wildschutt made his half-marathon debut in Valencia last October, where he clocked a time of 59:13, shaving 23 seconds off Stephen Mokoka’s previous national record.

The Western Cape native followed his brother, Nadeel Wildschutt, to Coastal Carolina University in the United States. There, the brothers are coached by legendary fellow South African distance runner Zola (Budd) Pieterse.
