Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says the taxi industry must take a stronger stand against violence that continues to endanger lives and harm the sector.

He was reacting to a series of recent taxi-related attacks.

In the latest incident, a taxi rank manager and a woman he was with were shot and killed near the Palm taxi rank in Delft on Monday night.

Cape Town has seen an escalation in taxi-related violence over the past week.

Nine minibus taxis were torched at the Nyanga taxi rank earlier this month, and last Thursday, three people were shot and killed at the Voorbrug taxi rank in Delft.

On Friday, a taxi driver was also killed in Mfuleni.

Provincial Mobility spokesperson Byron La Hoe has condemned the attacks.

"From the government’s side, we are looking at different ways to strengthen enforcement and bring more stability to the industry."

The department said cooperation between the government and the taxi industry will be critical to restoring safety and stability in public transport.
