While running is among the most accessible forms of exercise, many become discouraged soon after starting.

Jaide Jacobs, founder of the Slow and Steady running club in Cape Town, explained that it is not about being the fastest or the fittest.

“You don’t need to be super-fast, super-fit, or very experienced to start. All you need to do is show up.”

He recommended prioritising consistency over speed, investing in good running shoes for long-term success and avoiding injury.

“Try to build consistency before chasing any crazy goals. Even if it's 20 minutes or a run-walk, it is all going to count in the end.

“Don’t compare your starting point to where somebody else is after running for many years. Focus on your goals and know that progress is different for everybody. Stay in your lane and have a good time.”

He also highlighted the importance of a supportive community, whether you are a seasoned runner or just starting.

“Running is powerful on your own, but the magic really happens when you've got a good community surrounding you, keeping you accountable, motivated, and going."
