The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s newly elected finance committee chairperson Mark Burke said expanding the party’s donor base is important for its growth.

The 36-year-old was announced on Sunday as the party’s new money handler, capping off an impressive federal congress for the DA’s new, young leadership.

Out of the DA "top ten" leadership, only two people are 50 years and older.

The one thing that all political parties in South Africa agree on is that elections cost money.

With 2026 likely to be an election year, Burke has a huge task of ensuring the DA has enough money to achieve its stated goal of becoming the biggest political organisation in the country.

“We need to level up our finances. We are by far the best-run party when it comes to finances. We are well capitalised when it comes to donors committed to our course. We need to diversify our donor base. We need to make sure every South African feels like they can contribute.”

The term for the new DA leadership will run until 2029.
