Explosive allegations made by suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Semakaleng Manamela are sparking strong reaction, with civil society calling for an urgent investigation.
Manamela, who briefed the media on Sunday, claimed senior police officials, including National Commissioner Fannie Masemola and former minister Bheki Cele, were involved in corruption and political interference.
The two-time suspended top cop also made allegations that millions of rand were paid to block her return to office.
In response, national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said officers and the force's legal department will consult with Manamela.
The Activists and Citizens Forum said the allegations are as serious as those previously made by senior police officials and warn that they point to deep-rooted issues within the police service.
The group has called on the government to act swiftly, saying failure to address the claims could undermine public trust and national security.
It also urged more officers to come forward with information on wrongdoing.
“We hope this will inspire all the men and women in blue not to be afraid to expose wrongdoing in the South African Police Service.”
Authorities are yet to confirm whether any formal investigation will be launched into the claims.
