The City of Cape Town has confiscated two digger loaders linked to illegal sand mining in Khayelitsha.

The heavy machinery was impounded on Friday during a large-scale operation, with both loaders removed by heavy-duty trucks.

Law enforcement officers had initially responded on Thursday, following ongoing complaints about illegal sand mining in the area.

Law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said when officers arrived, the drivers fled the scene with the keys.

"The digger loaders are suspected to be hired, so they remain in the city's possession. Machinery is believed to have been hired and will remain in the city’s possession until an investigation is finalised. Every effort will be made to bring those responsible for the illegal sand mining to book."
