COSATU affiliate trade unions have called for workers to unite in pursuit of a building an inclusive economy.
Members convened clad in their regalia at Mbekweni Stadium in Paarl to mark Worker's Day on Friday
Resounding calls for a decent, living wage to compete with the rising costs of living were made.
Unions met under the theme " “Workers are suffocating under a deepening cost-of-living crisis.”
Leaders in the tripartite alliance raised concerns over rising food prices, low wages and austerity measures that reduce staff and overburden workers
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo said remuneration inequalities remains a major issue.
"Issues of equality, where people who are doing the same job must be recognized in terms of remuneration. That struggle is far from being over," said Mahlobo.
Mahlobo has called on all workers to join a union in their respective sectors to unit in the struggle for economic emancipation.
