Listen below:
Still Good is an organisation that connects consumers with surplus and close-to-expiry groceries from retailers and cafés at discounts of up to 65 percent.
They are doing this through their Value Bags, which contain goods from a number of stores.
This platform aims to reduce food waste and support local causes.
Burrows says he was inspired to start this after working in retail and seeing the severity of the food waste problem in that space.
“Something like R20 billion worth of food is wasted annually in the retail environment in South Africa.”
- Steffen Burrows, CEO of Still Good
So far, they have sold more than 50,000 value bags which equates to preventing 50,000kg of carbon emissions through food waste and R2.7-million in savings for consumers.
For every bag bought, Still Good donates 10% to charity, which has worked out to almost R300,000.
They use a mystery bag model where you choose your bags, at a very low price, in whatever category you are looking to get.
“So, you just pick your category, it's 60% off. You don't know what you're getting, but the deal is so good that customers are loving it, and there's also a nice surprise factor.”
- Steffen Burrows, CEO of Still Good
Burrows says the retailers like the mystery bag model, as it ensures they do not take sales that would have happened in store, and customers are happy because of the massive discount.
