Joburg Human Settlements identifies 11 hijacked buildings, occupants face eviction

JOHANNESBURG - The Human Settlements Department in Johannesburg has identified 11 hijacked buildings owned by the city where occupants will face evacuation.
 
MMC Mlungisi Mabaso said the department is awaiting alternative accommodation for the illegal occupants before evacuations begin.

Mabaso conducted a visit to some of the buildings on Wednesday in areas including Hillbrow, where dilapidated buildings surrounded by litter are overcrowded, many by undocumented migrants.
 
The MMC said once the inspection is completed, they will find buildings to relocate people. 
 
"The evacuation must be planned when we are ready to provide an alternative accommodation, so some of the buildings are hijacked like your cashmere building."
