The City of Johannesburg confirmed on Tuesday that Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco), Themba Mathibe, was taken in for questioning by law enforcement authorities.
Multiple sources told EWN that Mathibe was arrested on Monday evening and detained at the Sandton police station.
It was understood that the senior official was being investigated after being linked to alleged irregularities involving certain contracts.
The 28-year-old is also a member of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) and recently served on its National Executive Committee.
The entity, however, declined to confirm or deny the arrest of Mathibe, saying it would leave the matter to the relevant authorities.
Spokesperson Nthabiseng Mphela said that while the municipal housing company’s offices were raided by law enforcement officers, further direction would be provided once police formally communicated with the entity.
“Once the allegations, if any, are formally confirmed through the appropriate legal and governance channels, the Joshco board will provide direction on the way forward for the organisation, in line with applicable legislation, governance frameworks, and internal policies.”
Mathibe had served as the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) CEO for the past two years but was recently seconded to lead Joshco.
