Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum says gang violence has left the community traumatised

CAPE TOWN - The Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum said that the recent spate of gang violence in the suburbs had left the community traumatised.

At least seven people have been gunned down in separate shootings in Mitchells Plain in the space of a month.

Six youngsters between 15 and 24 years old were killed in two mass shootings in Tafelsig and Rocklands.

A 17-year-old boy was also shot and killed last month in Beacon Valley.

Then on Thursday night, a 42-year-old man was shot and killed in Ascot Street in Beacon Valley.

Mitchell's Plain CPF spokesperson, Norman Jantjes, said that the increase in gun violence had residents feeling hopeless.

"Because we've experienced gangsterism for all these years and we don't feel that government is serious about addressing the spate of gun violence. When it comes to elections, a lot of promises are made by all the different parties and different levels of government. But after elections, it's like business as usual."
