Relief may soon be in sight for thousands of Johannesburg residents affected by ongoing water cuts.

Johannesburg Water has entered the final commissioning stage of the new Brixton Reservoir, Tower and Pump Station Complex, a key intervention to restore stability to the embattled Commando System.

As part of standard quality checks, the reservoir was temporarily drained for cleaning and compliance inspections.

It will now be refilled, with final water quality tests conducted before it goes fully operational.

Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said the added storage and pumping capacity will strengthen supply to high-demand suburbs, hospitals, and universities that have endured repeated disruptions.

"Once final cleaning and water quality testing are concluded, the system will be fully integrated into the network. This investment will greatly improve supply stability for affected communities."
