South African Communist Party veteran Yunus Carrim has called on the tripartite alliance to throw its weight behind strengthening COSATU.

The former communications minister says organized labour must play a bigger role in society.

The call comes as the trade federation marked Workers’ Day with a rally in Paarl.

Carrim said the alliance is bound not only by shared membership, but by its commitment to a radical national democratic revolution.

"We say that COSATU needs to unite, we say that COSATU needs to be more organized, we say all alliance partners, it is all our interest to strengthen COSATU.
