The stats show reported domestic violence cases have increased by just over 4% when compared to the previous year.

Western Cape Police say more than 7000 domestic-related criminal cases were recorded in the province in the second quarter of the year.

Acting Commissioner, Lieutenant General Preston Voskuil, unpacked the crime statistics for the province earlier today.

The stats show reported domestic violence cases have increased by just over 4% when compared to the previous year.

According to police, 75% of the victims of all cases of common assault and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm are women.

"Furthermore, to indicate the volumes within this category lies within the assault GBH and the assault common categories that provide most of these incidents.  For the period under review, 75.5% of the victims were females. and it's a slight increase when compared to the previous financial year,” said Police spokesperson Monica Swart

Swart adds that drug-related crimes remain high, with Cape Town accounting for most incidents.

"All of our districts had an increase in volumes recorded in the city of Cape Town, 63.4% followed by the Garden Route 11%. "
