WATCH: 'I've realised the importance of your tribe.' Sherlin celebrates her 1st Mother's Day
Sherlin talks about how her perception of 'being a mom' has changed since having twins.
We promise; wholesomeness lies here.
This Mother's Day (Sunday, 12 May) is special for one of the Kfm Mornings presenters, Sherlin Barends, as this marks her first one with her twins.
In December 2023, Sherlin and her partner welcomed twin boys into the world, so we caught up with her on how things were going and how she would celebrate Mother's Day.
Spoiler alert: potjie kos, steaks and lots of love are involved.
[Now is when you fetch tissues.]
Of course, we couldn't leave it there!
Here are our favourite lil bits from the video...
Sherlin says the one thing she's learnt about becoming a mom is the value of her tribe and depending on them...
(If you know Sherlin, you'll know that the last bit is a challenge - Destiny's Child's 'Independent' used to be our gal's anthem. Here's to growth through motherhood!)
"I've had so much love and respect for my mom and other moms but after becoming a mom myself, the biggest change has been that before motherhood, I was very independent, doing things my way and by myself. After becoming a mother, I've realised the importance of your tribe. Shoutout to my tribe - my mom, the nannies, friends and family - it really does take a village and I'm so happy and blessed to have mine."

Sherlin hopes her twins grow up to be 'courageous' and 'curious', forging their own paths in life.
"It's my wish that they will be curious and courageous and have the courage to build the life of their dreams. All I want for them to be is brave enough to pave their own way."

As for what the twins have taught Sherlin... one word: mindfulness
"Before I became a mom, I had all these ideas of what I want to teach my kids one day, but they have taught me so much already. They have taught me to be a lot more patient, kinder and loving. But the biggest lesson my twins have taught me is to be mindfully rooted in the present. We can so quickly be distracted by what has happened or what will happen that when you look into those eyes and those smiles - they remind you of the importance of the here and now and you remember that everything is okay."

Sherlin shares the best mom advice she's ever received and it's all about self-love and self-care...
Be honest, when last have you poured into your cup first?
"I've received so much advice but the best was from a good friend of mine and it's the importance of self-love. We all know that you can't pour from an empty cup. And you can only show up for anyone, including your kids, when you show up for yourself. So, making self-love a daily habit and a practice is very important."

But the best advice comes from Sherlin's 'mooms'...
Yes, that's what she calls her mom - baie oulik.
"My mooms has taught me so much but the biggest lesson she has taught me is that life... is life and you're going to fall but when you fall, get back up, get back up with grace, and then try again."

And now for Mother's Day celebrations...
Sherlin will celebrate her first Mother's Day with the twins and love all around her.
"I'm so excited for my first Mother's Day. I'll be celebrating at my parents' home which is now also my home because I moved back... I really needed all of the love and support having twins... so celebrating at home with my parents in Stellenbosch with my twins and my partner. My papsie wapsie will be making his famous potjie kos and my partner will be preparing some steaks. So just a good day with food and family because food is love and family is love and just spending time with the twins."
