It was a night of many firsts at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant that was held in Mexico on Saturday.

Chidimma Adetshina flew the Nigerian flag high delivering the country's best performance to date at the prestigious pageant as the first runner-up.

Denmark also made history, winning the crown for the first time thanks to Victoria Kjaer Theilvig.

Adetshina also received the title of Miss Universe Africa and Oceania as she was the highest-ranked contestant from Africa.

She previously entered the Miss South Africa pageant but withdrew citing concerns for her safety and well-being, following a controversy over her citizenship.

Adetshina was later invited to be a contestant in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant where she emerged victorious.

Meanwhile, reigning Miss South Africa Mia le Roux withdrew from the Miss Universe pageant a day before the finale due to health concerns.
