7 December 2024 | 15:5037 of the 38 community pools in Cape Town will be re-opened in phases over the summer season.
Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been taking a few dips himself as the City works hard to re-open public swimming pools in time for summer.
Its Recreation and Parks Department is re-opening community pools in a phased approach, with 37 out of 38 to be operational over the season, extending into the New Year.
This approach balances the need for public access with the ongoing maintenance of critical infrastructure, the City says.
Hill-Lewis posted before and after pics of the revamped Emthonjeni pool in Gugulethu, where he took a dip himself this week.
'Kids were already lining up outside', he writes, saying their excitment is a reminder of the purpose in the City team's work.
Currently, 10 swimming pools are operational:
Long Street, Atlantis, Blue Downs, Kuils River Resort, Elsies River, Parow North, Muizenberg, Retreat, Newlands, Zandvlei Caravan Park
