School derbies are highly anticipated events on the school calendar, but could parents be taking it too far?
Hilton College Headmaster George Harris recently sent out a lengthy letter, encouraging parents to tone down on the pitch-side 'opulence' and 'extravagance', after a big derby with longtime rival Michaelhouse.
“Parents, we have gotten a little bit dicey in behaviour when it comes to the stuff we do on the side of the field. It’s no longer about the boys, it's no longer about the event, but who can rock up wearing what…”

“Hilton and Michaelhouse are two of the most expensive schools in the country… his very important lesson here is your children are privileged… but let’s try and model an example for them of how to behave on the side of the field and turn down the opulence.”
– Cindy Poluta
“These events, they’ve become social events on the calendar instead of school events.”
– Frankie du Toit
947’s listeners weigh in…
“I have to agree. I think we’ve gone too far as parents, and what we don’t see is, we are just putting pressure on the kids. Even with matric dances, I think we are just taking things too far.”

“We have a thing called class moms, everything goes through the class moms… [They] are competing and they are putting us in the mix… We had a Grade One party, we had golf carts, we had gazebos, and platters… it was a Grade One teacher party!”
