19 suspects arrested after Mitchell's Plain gang-related shootings not linked to the crimes

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police said none of the nineteen suspects arrested after a flare-up of gang-related shootings in Mitchell's Plain could be linked to the incidents.

Seven people were shot dead and seven others injured in the area since Thursday last week.

Soon after the incidents police raided forty-three suspected gang houses before arresting nineteen suspects for murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of guns.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said only seven of the nineteen suspects could be linked to outstanding warrants of arrest.

Pojie said three suspects face charges of assault, one for dealing in drugs, two for possession of illegal firearms and one for illegal possession of firearms.

Pojie confirmed none of the nineteen suspects could be positively linked to the shootings in Mitchell's Plain on Thursday and Sunday last week.

The Mitchell's Plain CPF is set to meet with the Western Cape police commissioner on Wednesday to discuss gang violence in the area.
