Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku has labelled taxi association CODETA's court application challenging his decision to closed certain taxi routes in Cape Town as a waste of time and money.

CODETA has taken Sileku to court for closing down ten taxi routes and specific lanes at taxi ranks in Mfuleni, Khyaelitsha and Somerset West.

This follows the killing of at least ten people in taxi related shootings in recent weeks, linked to a feud over the closed routes between rivals CATA and CODETA.

Sileku said CODETA should be focusing its energy on peace talks rather than dragging him to court.

He said should there be no solution reached between CATA and CODETA to end their feud, he'll be forced to extend the current 30-day shutdown currently in place.

Wednesday marks 15 days since Sileku implemented the measures to prevent further taxi related violence.

"If they don't come to an arrangement or an agreement before the 30 days, I will extend. I did not say I will go back to Cabinet and ask for permission to extend because I know my responsibility as the minister of mobility in the Western Cape, it's entirely dependent on me."

Sileku and CODETA are expected back in court on Saturday to continue arguing their cases.
