Cape Town cultural icons David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen are set to be bestowed the city's highest civic honour Freedom of the City.

The legendary duo are to be awarded for their countless individual creative achievements, including theatrical collaborations for District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said Kramer and Petersen posthumously will be presented with the accolade at a ceremony in January next year.

“The Freedom of the City will be bestowed on two very special individuals who count among our city’s most-loved, most famous, and influential cultural ambassadors. It is my pleasure to announce that David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen will receive the freedom of the city."

Hill-Lewis said both Kramer and Petersen's family have accepted the award following the city council's approval of the nominations.

“Taliep and David take their place alongside titans of history like President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who are among only a handful of individuals to be awarded the Freedom of Cape Town.”

Hill-Lewis said the city will also award civic honours and mayor’s medals to a range of luminaries at a council ceremony next month.
