Some Vosloorus residents sceptical there was an attempted hit on Mogotsi’s life

Some Vosloorus residents have expressed scepticism over controversial businessman Brown Mokgotsi’s claims that there was an attempt on his life.

Mokgotsi was allegedly shot at on Monday night while driving a red Chevrolet sedan in Johannesburg's East Rand.

He told police that unknown assailants in a white bakkie opened fire on his vehicle.

The businessman is at the centre of a police corruption scandal and is accused of acting as a middleman between senior officers and underworld figures.

Community members who live near the scene of the alleged shooting spoke to EWN on Tuesday.

At around 10 o'clock on Monday night, several Vosloorus residents living near the N3 highway reported hearing loud gunshots.

A community member, who asked to remain anonymous, said he rushed outside and saw a red Chevrolet riddled with bullet holes.

“When I came out the house, the car’s headlights were on, the windows were shattered and there were bullet marks on the car.”

He claims that Mokgotsi ran away from the scene, came back later in a VW Golf, and then informed community members that he had almost been killed.

“I then asked him why, as a well-known businessman, he was driving a Chevrolet Aveo. He said he was in disguise. When I checked, his car didn’t have a licence disc.”

Both he and his neighbour said Mokgotsi appeared unbothered by what he described as an attempt on his life.

Police have confirmed that Mokgotsi escaped unharmed.
