Mining production increased by 1.2% year-on-year in September.

This follows a marginal contraction in August.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) released the latest mining data on Thursday.

Principal survey statistician at Stats SA Juan-Pierre Terblanche said production was pulled up by platinum group metals (PGMs), gold and coal.

“Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2,2% in September 2025 compared with August 2025. This followed month-on-month changes of -0,9% in August 2025 and 1,2% in July 2025.”

PGMs are also among commodities that gave the mining industry a boost in the over third quarter.

“Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2,5% in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the second quarter of 2025. The largest positive contributors were PGMs [6,7% and contributing 1,7 percentage points], manganese ore [6,8% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point] and coal [1,0% and contributing 0,3 of a percentage point].”
