MK Party says it remains opposed to G20 Leaders Summit

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced its position on the G20 Leaders Summit, saying it remains opposed to the international gathering expected to sit this weekend.

The party said while it understands the purpose of the event, it argued South Africa should prioritise fixing its domestic challenges.

Heads of state and other delegates are expected to start arriving in Johannesburg between on Thursday and Friday for the global gathering.

The MK Party maintains that South Africa should shift its attention away from international engagements and instead focus on “getting its house in order”.

It points to the unemployment crisis, failing state institutions, a stagnant economy and inequality as issues that require urgent government attention.

The official opposition argues the G20 summit is little more than a global showcase for photo opportunities, speeches and statements that won’t translate into meaningful change for ordinary South Africans.

But President Cyril Ramaphosa begs to differ.

“Our G20 is rather special because it speaks to the theme that we chose: solidarity, equality and sustainability. I do wish we had added the word including because our G20 is about inclusion.”
