The son of late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe is facing at least seven charges, including attempted murder, after being linked to the shooting of a man at his Johannesburg home.

29-year-old Bellarmine Mugabe appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday alongside his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhdze.

Last Thursday, a man who is understood to be a security guard was shot at Mugabe’s plush home in Hyde Park.

Police are yet to recover the firearm used during the crime.

According to the incomplete charge sheet, Mugabe and Matonhdze are facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, defeating the ends of justice, contravening the immigration act, theft, and pointing a firearm.

Sinen Mnguni, the attorney representing the pair, said he is unaware of the additional charges.

"We can’t speak too much at this stage, it’s only been brought to our attention, we still need to take instructions from our client as the prosecution stated the investigations from the SAPS is still ongoing so we’re still waiting for those to be finalised so that we can then of course consult with our client, take instructions and then take the neccessary steps in order to deal with our clients matter."

Mnguni could also not confirm if Tobias is related to the Mugabe family, despite him having Mugabe listed as his third name.

The State intends to oppose their bail when they return to court on Tuesday next week.
