Police say preliminary reports into the Yeoville shooting indicate that the victims were followed from the airport.

It's alleged the five suspects were travelling in two separate vehicles, trailing the unsuspecting victims from the OR Tambo International Airport.

But police stopped them and this resulted in them shooting at the officers.

Police then returned fire, killing four of them

Police and emergency services personnel are still at the crime scene after the deadly shooting of four suspects.

Officers said one of the suspects sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said the Crime Intelligence Unit received information regarding the suspects who are believed to be part of a syndicate targeting travellers leaving the airport.

She said the suspects were travelling in a white Suzuki sedan with false number plates.

"The crime scene management has just arrived. They will be the ones that are taking care of the exhibits on the scene but we know that three firearms have been recovered."

Police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and possession of ammunition.
