Massive fire displaces 477 Quarry Road informal settlement residents in KZN

A devastating fire at the Quarry Road informal settlement in KwaZulu-Natal has left 477 people displaced including 299 children after about 134 were destroyed earlier this week.
 
Authorities said that emergency and disaster teams responded to the incident swiftly with displaced residents now sheltered in temporary marquees.

Police said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation however, efforts are underway to provide school uniforms for children returning to class while officials are also assisting residents replace lost identity documents.
 
KZN Human Settlements Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said “During winter, we experience cold weather and already there are fires that are destroying informal settlements. Here in eThekwini alone, more than 20 fires have been reported. We have also received a report from the disaster management team from eThekwini indicating that there was fire in the Kennedy informal settlement. There was also fire in the Clare estate’s informal settlement.”
