Well-known Cape Town singer, songwriter and Kfm Lunch presenter EB Inglis (Moegamat Ebrahiem Inglis),has dropped a new song, and it's hot!
Inglis tells Sara-Jayne Makwala King that We Ain't Friends is not a 'diss track', but rather a song that explores the blurred line between friendship and attraction during a spontaneous late-night connection.
The playful, nostalgic R&B song is built on a catchy hook and smooth vocals, driven by early 2000s Pop R&B energy.
Inglis shares how his writing process has changed since the early days when he was a big hip-hop fan and wrote raps, not songs as such.
He was primarily lyric-driven, until realising that the power of songwriting is really in the melody at the first few listens.
"People listen to melodies - it's about vibes first and then only after like the tenth listen do they really pay attention to the lyrics."
His aim now, is to achieve the best of both.
"... to focus on strong melodies, and then also write good lyrics so that by the time you come around to actually paying attention to the words, you'd think 'oh, that's quite clever!'. So I focus first on the melody now, and then I try and colour it in with clever lyrics and good stories."
Inglis says he's not bothered by any negative responses he might find on his social media platforms, because his kids love his music.
"Both of them are the biggest fans of my music which means a lot to me - even if I have trolls popping up with bad comments it doesn't matter to me."
You can stream We Ain't Friends on major platforms like SoundCloud.
Inglis also discusses his musical influences - take a listen in the interview audio at the bottom of the article.
