Cape Town's Chapman's Peak Drive was closed earlier on Saturday due to a fatal cycling accident.

A social media alert posted just after noon advised motorists to use alternate routes.

This was updated later in the afternoon to say that Chapman's Peak Drive was open, urging users to remember that 'everyone's safety is imperative'.

The Pedal Power Association's 'Stay Wider of the Rider' campaign reported that there had been a collision between three cyclists and a tour bus.

One of the cyclists passed away at the scene of the crash whilst another was airlifted to hospital and a third sustained lesser injuries.

The riders were apparently heading towards Hout Bay, when they collided with the bus that was turning right into a picnic area.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

'Stay Wider of the Rider' expressed condolences to the family and friends of the fallen cyclist.

They referenced what has been devastating week for the cycling community in Cape Town.
