CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit speaks with Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Chairperson of the Archbishop Tutu IP Trust.
Listen below:
Ramphele says it is time for South Africa to stand firm on its principles by expelling Israel’s ambassador.
She issued a statement over the weekend saying South Africa’s strategy of using diplomacy in response to Israel amid the genocide in Gaza has been exemplary.
However, she argues that it is time to take "decisive action".
This call comes after Isreal violated the ceasefire in Gaza which Ramphele says it is a violation of the principle of Ubuntu.
She adds that we must call on the international community to stop being silent in the face of genocide.
“What does it say about us, and about what it means to be human, if we watch that and remain silent?”

Some fear that standing firm on Israel could further damage our relationship with the US and threaten access to the American market.
However, Ramphele argues that our relationship as it stands with the US is not benefiting the majority of South Africans and we cannot allow ourselves to be "trapped" by this relationship.
