Traffic Services recorded more than 2,7 million offences in the last year. To help simplify traffic fine payments, a number of retail payment options are available since 1 July, courtesy of a new service provider.
Traffic fines can be paid at Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs), online via a service provider website www.paythat.co.za, at municipal cash offices and at till points at these participating retailers:
- Game
- Massmart
- Makro
- Builder's Warehouse
- Jumbo
- Pick 'n Pay
- Boxer stores
- Kazang
"In an ideal world, motorists would not break the law and rack up huge numbers of fines. Some incidents are genuine lapses in judgment or time, and then there are habitual offenders who couldn’t care about following the rules. Traffic fines serve as a deterrent and stop most motorists from engaging in unsafe driving behaviours like speeding, running red lights, or driving under the influence. When we hold our motoring public accountable for their actions through fines, they are more likely to adhere to traffic laws and regulations, thus creating safer roads for everyone. We have made it easier for those who want to do the right thing and pay their dues."
- JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member - Safety and Security
The Traffic fine roadshows have also proven to be very popular and will likely continue to remain in rotation.
Details of planned roadshows will be made public once these are confirmed.
It is important to note that the roadshows are an added value service, and that there are numerous existing channels where motorists can check whether they have fines, and process payment.
The City also reminds the public to use only approved channels to make payment – third-party service providers are not endorsed by the City's Traffic Service, and using these services is done at the individual’s own risk.
The City is aware of instances where members of the public have lost money in this manner – they are encouraged to report such instances to the South African Police Service.
"Paying a traffic fine promptly is crucial to avoid escalating penalties, legal consequences, and can lead to licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, and even a warrant of arrest. Do the right thing and pay your fines."
- JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member - Safety and Security
