The IEC should be 'strengthened' through prayer ahead of elections, says Ramaphosa

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa says as South Africa is approaching a critical election season, political parties require strength as they contest the general polls.

Ramaphosa was speaking at a church in Bloemfontein on Friday, as part of his Easter weekend programme.

He has urged South Africans to pray for the government and a peaceful election on 29 May. 

The president also asked those who believe in divine intervention to pray for the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). 

"We would like the IEC to be strengthened so that they are able to leave no one behind and do their work as laid out in the election."

Sharing the same sentiments, DA leader John Steenhuisen said Christians should pray for a peaceful transition should a new government reign supreme.

"As Christians come together to celebrate Easter and the miracle of peace, hope and renewal, I call on South Africans to pray for a peaceful election."
