JOHANNESBURG - There is still resistance from some residents along the Vaal River, who are refusing to evacuate despite the growing risk of flooding.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says its Vaal Dam crew is aware that some residents are ignoring evacuation orders.
On Sunday, the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that ten sluice gates have been opened at the Vaal Dam, which is currently overflowing.

Earlier this month, following significant rainfall, the department issued its first warning, urging residents along the riverbanks to evacuate as a precaution.
NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that since Wednesday, teams have been assisting with relocating people affected by the rising water level.
"While the NSRI, police, and emergency services are on high alert 24/7, there has been a focus on preparedness since early April, with early alerts regarding the Vaal Dam, Bloemhof Dam, and surrounding waterways, where water levels were expected to exceed capacity."
