JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department has set aside R100 million for the replacement of aging equipment in hospitals across the province.
In an official statement, the department highlighted ongoing infrastructural challenges that were mostly evident during the winter season.
Many healthcare facilities have been affected by system breakdowns, with outdated heating and boiler systems among the most pressing issues.
Provincial health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said that the heavy use of heating equipment during colder months significantly contributed to its deterioration.
"Recently in May, we saw several facilities experiencing the visible effects of this aging infrastructure when breakdowns in the boiler system resulted in inconsistent supply of hot water. However, we have contractors on standby that were able to respond to the situation and ensure that the distress calls from the various facilities was responded to quickly."
